From the Principal

‘The partnership between home and school has never been more important, fragile or tenuous. Around three decades now of the media highlighting only the problems between parents and schools – rather than the massive volume of positive interactions – will do that. As a result, we find ourselves seeking to encourage parents out of a fixed, adversarial approach to the school and back into partnership.’ Adam Voigt

As a school we work in partnership with parents and families to support each child’s individual needs whether academic, social or emotional and the safety of all students is our priority. I would like to reassure you that when children need additional support to manage challenging behaviours the school works with teachers, the Learning Support Team, the leadership team, the school psychologist, and in consultation with parents to develop an Individual Positive Behaviour Support plan.

Throughout the process we respect a family’s right to privacy and make every effort to maintain confidentiality. This helps to build trust and confidence in the school's handling of sensitive matters. These are the positive partnerships which create our supportive and inclusive learning environment where all students feel safe and can thrive.

I really enjoyed our Talk for Writing Word Collector assembly yesterday afternoon as a part of our Book Fair activities, as it showcased our whole school approach to teaching writing and the power of words. In today’s newsletter we’ve published Kencho’s (one of our Year 5 students) talk focussed on the power of kindness, which concludes with a reminder that: kindness is free to give but its value is priceless. Wise words from one so young and closely connected to our behavioural expectations at City Beach Primary School, that encourage us all to reflect on our choices and ask are our actions, thoughts, and words – SAFE, KIND, FAIR?

Our teachers and education assistants are amazingly talented educators who are committed to their teaching practice. Thank you for trusting us and leaving your most precious possessions in our care for over 30 hours or so each week, we value and thank you for your support and the positive partnerships we share.

The Power of Kindness

"Good Morning everyone. Today I want to talk to you about the power of kindness.

Kindness is like a magic potion that can make the world a better place. When you are kind to others, you spread happiness and positivity all around you. Imagine a world where everyone is kind to one another. There would be no more bullying, no more hurt feelings and no more loneliness. Instead there would be smiles, laughter and friendship everywhere you go.

So let's make our school, our community and our world a better place by showing compassion and love toward others. Remember, kindness is free to give, but it's value is priceless. Thank you".

Kencho, Year 5

From The Deputy
Leaders at Parliament House
On Thursday 9 May the School Captains were very fortunate to be invited to Parliament House for a special lunch. Here is how the School Captains described the experience.

“It was very inspiring and made us feel honoured. We are grateful we had the opportunity for this special visit and to meet and talk to Dr David Honey MLP and Mrs Christine Tonkin MLP”  – Ivy
“Something I remembered from the visit to Parliament House was hearing the treasurer Rita Saffioti handing down the budget in the parliamentary chambers.” Aidan -
“Something I learnt from going to parliament house was that the Budget needs to be announced by the treasurer and approved by members of parliament.” -  Varya
“Something I would like to know more about is the Golden Staff that was in the chambers at Parliament House.  Aidan I would like to know more about the careers you can have as a politician or working in parliament.” -  Evie

Room 2 Assembly
Thank you to Mrs Sobkowiak, Mrs Earnshaw and Mrs Veitch and Room 2 for the GRRREAT  pirate themed  assembly. The assembly showcased Room 2 learning both in class and out and about in the community.  Excursions included a visit to Sampson House in Fremantle and the Perth Mint to consolidate learning across the curriculum.

Talk 4 Writing Assembly and T4W
Thank you to Miss Booker and her 2024 Talk for Writing crew for putting on an inspiring assembly to encourage us all to be word collectors and create our own “magpie journal.”

The assembly was a great opportunity to share with the school community an aspect of the Talk for Writing program which is a whole school approach. Learning the text orally is the first phase of the writing program with oral rehearsal embedding rich language features. This is supported with action to give prompts for words and phrases.  So, when a word – catches your attention, POPS off the page or jumps out at you, add it to your own magpie journal.

Remember to join in with the

National Simultaneous Story Time and Book Fair

This morning classes joined together to listen to the book Bower Bird Blues by Aura Parker. Aura Parker is an award-winning illustrator, writer and designer. Her  storytelling though words and pictures inspires imagination, courage and confidence in young readers as well as a love, curiosity and passion for nature. Classes learnt more about the Bower Bird and participated in follow up activities based on the story. Remember to check out the Bowerbird Blues display in the library as a part of the Book Fair.

Thank you, all parents, in Room 1 for their help in running this event. A special thanks to the Book Fair crew, Linda, Jenna, Ellen and Dana.

PE News
This term in Sport and PE we have the year 4,5 and 6 classes involved in the Sporting Schools WA Football program which started last week and the wonderful, young and innovative coach from Claremont Football Club, Ed, was welcomed like a celebrity.

The Eagles cup is under way each Friday during Senior Sport. This is where we see our top netballers, soccer and football players display their courageous skills and tackle challenges that other schools throw at them. Lots of wins and a few losses so far. This week we have a bye.

The Interhouse Cross Country carnival is only weeks away (Wednesday 5 June), so students are working on their endurance skills in PE.  Running Club is available for those keen runners every Friday morning from 7.45am to 8.30am. I’m looking forward to seeing you there and am truly excited to join the City Beach PE department this term.

Kind Regards,
Kathryn Scott
PE/Sport Teacher
